Renewable electricity generation refers to systems that make electricity from energy sources that naturally renew over time.
Some renewable technologies do not generate electricity. Instead, they help you use less energy or provide heat (for example, Biomass).
To better serve more New Brunswickers, our current programs are changing to focus on energy efficiency. This helps New Brunswickers use less energy and is a step toward addressing their main concerns around affordability, while also making sure more New Brunswickers and New Brunswick-based businesses can benefit from our ratepayer-funded programs.
New Brunswick businesses will see changes to these programs:
In these programs, incentives for solar PV systems, wind systems, and run-of-river hydro systems are being phased out.
Incentives for biomass and for renewables that improve equipment efficiency are not affected by this change. These will continue to be offered across multiple business energy-efficiency programs offered through SaveEnergyNB.
May 27, 2026 is the cut-off date to register to receive incentives for solar PV, wind, and run-of-river hydro projects.
All solar PV, wind, and run-of-river hydro projects that have already received pre-approval will be processed, no need to reapply. However, the projects must be completed and incentive claims submitted by January 31, 2027 to receive payment. We recommend contacting the program team directly, using your project ID, to confirm the status of your project.
All solar PV, wind, and run-of-river hydro installations must be completed and incentive claim forms submitted by January 31, 2027 to receive payment.
At this time, no further changes to renewable funding are planned. Separating renewable energy generation from our energy efficiency programs will allow NB Power to deliver renewable energy incentive programs when funding for those programs becomes available. Any updates will be communicated in a timely manner.
Not at all. In the last two years we have signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for 650 MW of new wind energy and have a Request for Expression of Interest (REOI) open until the end of April 2026 for Battery Energy Storage Systems.
We remain committed to a cleaner and greener energy supply. This change is a strategic shift to ensure more New Brunswickers and New Brunswick-based businesses can benefit from our ratepayer-funded programs.
