“The renovation has made huge steps forward for reducing energy consumption and improving temperature control for this facility.” - Perry Eldridge, Manager of Technical and Energy Services.

For over 40 years, Sackville’s Mount Allison University has been on a quest to reduce its energy consumption. Its goal: to reduce its operations’ environmental impact and reduce energy costs.

The university’s Manager of Technical and Energy Services, Perry Eldridge, has been accessing NB Power’s energy efficiency programs for years to help identify and implement energy saving initiatives. The energy audits - incented by NB Power’s program - have helped to focus on improvements that provide the biggest energy reductions. The university is always looking forward and continuously improving by re-investing their energy spend savings back into new projects.

Mount Allison University is no stranger to ambitious construction projects. In the past few years, they have undertaken several large-scale initiatives to improve the campus. One project included a heat recovery system upgrade for the Barclay Chemistry Building ventilation system.

The old system was inefficient and caused problems with heat distribution. The new heat recovery system has solved these problems, by improving the ventilation and heat distribution and at the same time, reducing the facility’s consumption.

“The renovation has made huge steps forward for reducing energy consumption and improving temperature control for this facility,” says Perry.

This is just one example of the university’s commitment to improving their campus and ensuring it is a comfortable, efficient, and enjoyable community, in which to learn, live, and work.

Perry says his experience with NB Power was a bonus: “The team was easy to work with and the process was streamlined.”

Mount Allison’s sustainability journey is far from over. Energy saving initiatives are called a work in progress, and they have plans to go through other efficiency programs again in the future.

According to Perry, the best way to become more energy efficient is to start as soon as possible.  “Don’t wait- get started now!”
